Ragamuffin Soul, The Review

Our podcast with Carlos Whittaker was recorded 2 days before his full-length album dropped. So, we thought it would be appropriate to post a review of the album. Here we go:
After our hour long conversation with Carlos Whittaker, I knew I had to buy this album. One of the things that impresses me most about Carlos is that he’s a very honest, open person. Whenever I read of worship leaders or pastors talk about “authenticity” I’m always a little skeptical to HOW authentic they really are. Well, with Carlos Whittaker, there’s no doubt that he puts his money where his mouth is. This album stands out as a real honest expression of what & where Carlos sees worship in the church going. I love the simplicity of the album. The lyrics are right there flowing from his heart and I believe the recording captured that perfectly.
It’s always a difficult task to record a worship album in the studio and give it the same feel that the songs have as they’re performed live. Well, Jason Ingram & crew did just that. The technical side of this record is brilliant. Production is beautiful. It’s loud. It’s easy to get lost in it. The mix is deep & even and Carlos’ vocals are solid.
Let’s dive into the tracks. For me, the favs are: Rain It Down, God of Second Chances, & We Will Worship You; tracks 1 ,3, & 4 respectively. But don’t let my favs fool ya…this record is good cover to cover. One of the best things about this record is the diversity in style. Carlos didn’t just keep writing the same song over and over again with the same hook, the big U2 style guitars and bass & tempo. There’s a sound & style I think, for everyone in this record. Whether you like the upbeat tempo and big sound, or the slower, smooth tempo-ed reflective songs, it’s all in there.
For me, this record is a must-have. I love it. I have listened to it almost non-stop since I bought it. If you haven’t stopped by the iTunes store and picked it up, be sure you do, you won’t regret it. I’m going to give this album a 4.5 Cups of Coffee out of 5…which would be like Stars, but since we’re the CaffeinatedFaith.com guys, we do it all with Coffee.
